The Stuart McElrath Company (SMC) is going open source for application and operating system software. Can you really trust your data to a closed source solution over which you have no control?

SMC has seen the growing trend of software companies which lock your companies data to a software application that has no or very limited export features. Once your data is locked into this proprietary format, you must continually invest in and endless cycle of costly software and hardware upgrades over which you have no control.

Are you in and industry that has specific software needs or terminology that doesn't exist in standard applications. Good luck getting major application vendors to make the changes you need. You will simply be told that the market is not large enough for the development costs.

Per Wikipedia, Open source software (OSS) can be defined as computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition.

This permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified form. It is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open source software is the most prominent example of open source development and often compared to user generated content.

Have you ever had software that had a know bug? When you reported it, where you told that it would be fixed in the next release, which you of course will need to buy? Which Open Source Software the programs code is available to the public. You can have the changes made that you feel are important to you company and its business. Data file formats are well documented and can easy be converted to new applications as the need arises.

  • Operating Systems In their simplest form, operating systems control the interaction between the application software and the computers hardware. Most current open source operating systems are based on UNIX and are either BSD or Linux at their core.

Applications For most computers, their purpose is to generate a data. This can we, but not limited to, documents, music, Computer Aided Design or project files. So, the application program is why we have and use a computer. The data these programs generate is yours, so why lock it into a proprietary format?

  • Development Open Source has many tools available to write applications. Most of these tools are free, saving thousands of dollars and can be download as needed. These programming tools are well documented and  provide may examples of code to help you get started.

Interested in Open Source Software? If so, SMC can come on site and work we you to determine what your needs are and which operating systems and applications will fulfill them.
